Liberty

Why does Liberty come at such a high price?

The domain name "liberty.com" is currently listed at a price of $5,000,000. Before you get all riled up enough to send us a nasty e-mail, you should be aware that we do know that this price tag is far above what most would consider a "reasonable market value" for this domain name. In truth, we are not in a big hurry to sell this domain name!

We have been using the name "Liberty" actively in commerce since 1992 and the domain name "liberty.com" since we first registered it in 1993. We have never done much with the website at the "liberty.com" URL, but we have made extensive use of our mail server at mail.liberty.com, telnet to liberty.com, ftp of files up and down from liberty.com, and at one time, even a major newserver at news.liberty.com that was fed by two internet satellite feeds on the roof of our building!

To this day, a number of our clients depend on our mail server at mail.liberty.com for their POP e-mail boxes @liberty.com. There are thousands of active page hit counters provided to our clients through a web address of web.liberty.com.

If we were to sell the domain name "liberty.com", a great deal of our internal operations as well as the operations of many of our clients would be disrupted. Thousands of our webpages and webpages of our clients would have to be modified to use page hit counters at new locations. Hundreds of pages that mention e-mail addresses @liberty.com would have to be located and modified. Many clients will have to be contacted and instructed on how to change their POP e-mail access, telnet and FTP procedures. There is grave danger of loss of good will on the part of our clients and an extensive and costly effort will be required on our part to restore the good will of our clients.

For these reasons, we have no interest in selling the "liberty.com" domain name at what would be considered a fair market price. The domain name "liberty.com" may be worth more to ourselves than anyone would be willing to pay for it. The only case under which we would be willing to part with the domain name is if we were compensated for the disruption that would result, especially for all the time and effort it will take us to make all the required changes to our pages and the pages of all our clients, as well as the effort that it will take to restore any damage of good will caused to our clients by such a disruption.

We would rather keep the domain name "liberty.com" than give it up for any offer less than $5,000,000. But, for that price and above, we could see that it would be worth our while to weather the above disruptions and expend the time and effort that would be needed to change everything over to a different domain name. We have no illusions that anyone is going to make us such an offer, especially in the current depressed market in domain name values. But, as we said at the start of this page, we are not in a great rush to part with this domain name.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of "liberty.com" will be provided to the relief efforts mentioned at www.LibertyUnited.org
